Enter the Barbie Doll

In 1959, Ruth Handler revolutionized the dress-up industry by introducing the most iconic role-play figure into the market—Barbie. The toy was 3D and came with endless accessories (playsets, clothes, shoes, etc.), leading to a Barbie boom in the 80s and 90s. As of 1996, nearly 99% of all girls between the ages of 3 and 10 had at least one Barbie. 

Mattel, the company that owns Barbie and of which Ruth Handler is a co-founder, was naturally among the first companies to take dress-up games into the digital age. Their first game was pretty basic and used clothes as puzzle items where, if matched correctly, you could move to the next level/ puzzle.
